KARACHI: The Sindh government decided to power Thar with solar panels to provide its residents with an uninterrupted power supply.
The coal mines have the largest lignite coal reserves in the world. Pakistan is going to utilize Thar Coal Royalty on solar power installation in Thar to relieve its residents.
Sindh energy minister Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh, on 31st May 2023, announced that the royalty funds received in exchange for Thar Coal Block 2 would be spent on installing solar systems.

The 15th Thar Foundation Board meeting was held to discuss the facilities provided to Thar residents under the royalty funds generated by the coal exchange.
The Sindh energy minister also proclaimed that 28 schools had been established under TCF. Out of 28 schools, 23 are fully operational and functional.
The meeting thoroughly discussed all the public facilities under the Thar Foundation.
Thar mine is declared the largest coal mine in Pakistan and is well known for abundant coal reserves. The mine is the largest lignite coal reserve in the world. The Thar coal reserves are estimated to be approx. 175 billion tonnes.
