Solar Powered Street Lights to be Installed on 106 Roads in Karachi

Karachi: KMC will install solar-powered street lights on 106 roads in Karachi.

Rising power costs have posed a significant challenge for government administrations, making managing and covering their electricity expenses difficult.

Therefore, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has devised a plan to illuminate street lights using solar power. In the last week of August 2023, the Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, disclosed that the KMC intends to energize the city's roads using electricity generated from solar sources. Taking into account the pollution levels prevalent in Karachi, he emphasized that.

"The solar plan has not yet been successful in Karachi because of the warm temperature and the dusty weather."

As per the Mayor of Karachi, the monthly electricity bill for street lights is more than 10 million, covering only 106 streets.

The solar street light project would reduce the electricity bills and lessen the maintenance cost.

Around 20 people are employed full-time by KMC to maintain KMC's street lights. The Mayor also highlighted that the KMC spends over PKR 200 million annually to repair and maintain street lights and electricity bills.

He said;

"We want to install fresh lights on the roads of Karachi."

The Mayor added that KMC would hire private contractors to operate solar LED street lights and ensure that the lights would not get stolen.
