Punjab Prisons to Reduce Electricity Expenditure by Going Solar

RAWALPINDI: Adiala central jail and 22 other prisons across Punjab will get solar panels installed. The project aims to make 22 prisons in Punjab self-sustaining in terms of electricity production, which will directly cut energy costs for the department.

In a recent meeting between Punjab Prisons Inspector General Mian Farooq Nazir and the managing director of the Punjab Energy Department, Abdul Rahman, it was decided to install solar panels across Punjab prisons.

Sources revealed that the solar conversion project will likely commence in July 2023. The prisons under the solar development project are Adiala Central Jail, Central Jail Lahore, Central Jail Multan, Central Jail Bahawalpur, and the high-security prison in Sahiwal.

The project's timeline is estimated to be six months, in which all the mentioned prisons will be shifted to solar energy. As far as the investment is concerned, the energy department's annual development program will cover the project's cost.

The current expenditure estimated by Punjab prisons is approximately Rs 2 billion. The initiative of solar panel conversion will reduce expenses by around Rs 1 billion.

After the completion of the project, the electricity tariff is expected to fall from Rs 32 to Rs 13 per unit, reducing electricity expenditure by Rs 19 per unit.

Pakistan is going to great lengths in transforming major government sectors to green energy. However, the country's total GHG emission share is 0.8%. Pakistan is actively making reforms to make the country dependent on renewable energy.
