Pakistan Railways is all set to optimize its expenses in the challenging economic condition of the country by shifting its operations to solar energy.
In an effort to overcome the energy crisis and reduce escalating fuel expenditure, Pakistan Railways is at the beck and call to solarize its offices and field formations. All the stations, offices, factories, and workshops operational under PR administration will be solarized soon.
The project’s first phase will shift 99 formations to solar energy. These include major railway stations, nine divisional HQs, and several railway offices.
The transition of railways field formation is expected to save Rs1.8 billion. Following Phase 1, subsequent phases will be added to cover all stations and offices of Pakistan Railways.
Pakistan Railways Chairman Mazhar Ali Shah stated that;
“We will shift the railway network to solar power on a priority basis, as we have appointed Nespak as our consultant in this regard.”
He mentioned that 99 railway formations will be shifted to solar energy, where a capacity of 33.326 megawatts will be installed.
In May 2023, Pakistan Railways proposed installing solar panels at 45 railway stations across Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Sukkur, Multan, Quetta, and Peshawar. The project financing was Rs 40 million collectively.
Moreover, Pakistan Railways management implemented a new policy to cut energy consumption, according to which officers are prohibited from using air conditioners in the offices till 11 am daily.
