A New Plan of Action to Deploy 9 MW of Additional Solar Power in Pakistan

Pakistan is strategizing a new auction plan to deploy 9 MW of additional solar power to the national grid. The goal of action includes the installation of 6 GW large-scale, 2 GW medium-scale, and 1 GW rooftop solar projects.

Tractebel, a construction engineering company and a subsidiary of Engie’s network, announced supporting the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) in developing and implementing a new strategy to generate an additional 9 MW solar capacity by 2030.

Tractebel provides technical and economic assistance and factors analytic services to Pakistan. The analysis of land availability, solar project costs, siting, and development for new solar projects is done by Tractebel company.

The company remarked;

“We will support and advise on the preparation of request for proposal (RFP) packages for independent power producer (IPP) and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), plus the entire bidding process including contract negotiations. The mandate is expected to be completed in early 2024.”

Samuel Karres, Tractebel Project Manager based in Germany, said;

“In many countries, reducing both emissions and dependence on imported fossil energy sources by means of increasing generation capacity from renewable energy sources are at the core of the energy sector’s development. For this initiative, speed is of the essence. Our Renewable Energy teams secured the contract with an efficient methodology designed to enable rapid implementation. We have a strong reputation in the renewables market on a global scale, but also a long and successful project track record in Pakistan.”

He also said that;

“This is also reflected in the fact that our Energy Division is currently working on two large solar PV projects consisting of six PV IPPs totaling 2,750 MW. Tractebel’s Water Division is also working on a number of hydropower projects in Pakistan, to further displace thermal generation. The key to our long-term success in the country is the strong partnerships we’ve formed over many years with local consultants, whose deep knowledge of the Pakistani energy market is invaluable.”

The 9 MW solar project entails three components: installing a 6 GW large utility-scale solar plant through the IPP scheme, 2 GW medium-scale solar projects through the IPP scheme, and 1 GW rooftop PV panels on federally owned public buildings.

The massive hike in per unit electricity cost has challenged every household and industry in Pakistan.

Adding 9 MW of solar energy would help improve the power system of Pakistan and provide the public with an affordable and uninterrupted electricity supply.
