Ishaq Jokhio, a small locality in Sindh province of Pakistan, solarized with 19-kilowatt mini grids turned out to be a life-changing initiative for its residence.
Indus Earth Trust (IET), a non-government organization, took the initiative of installing a solar plant at Ishaq Jokhio. People in this area had been facing extreme load shedding because of the peak electricity consumption in summer.
Ishaq Jokhio’s population mainly consists of day laborers. China Economic Net reported “Villages were selected according to a needs assessment survey, while the villagers provided the land where the 19-kilowatt mini-grids were installed. In this hamlet caressed by the sea breeze from the Arabian Sea, panels bred prosperity,”
The Ishaq Jokhio project was a success, and showed the potential of RE in Pakistan. Due to the extreme climate change and rise in temperature, it was estimated that 50% of the electricity is consumed by homes. Cooling appliances in homes consume a substantial amount of electricity. And the electricity demand is expected to increase to 234 TWh in 2030, a 121% increase from 2020.
