Solar Plants in the Czech Produced a Huge Surge of Energy That Grid Could Handle

On April 10, 2023, the Czech Republic encountered a power shortage due to the Easter holidays. However, the sunny weather turned out to be a blessing in disguise when solar plants generated more power than a grid could handle.

A Czech state-owned energy company ČEPS was forced to shut down hundreds of solar power systems.

According to Jan Krčmář, executive director of the Czech Solar Association, the Czech Republic has an inadequate power storage system, so they had to unplug the solar energy production units. He also stated that the Czech Republic is not yet ready for renewable energy production.

Solar energy needs to be stored for utilization, like any energy. Solar panels can generate more energy on a sunny day. However, if the energy storage resources are lacking, the power generated could be well-spent, and the electrical equipment of the grid can be protected. Otherwise, all the produced energy will get wasted and the grid will also be compromised.

The same happened in the Czech Republic, where solar panels produced much of the energy in the absence of an adequate storage capacity resulting in the shutting down of hundreds of solar panels.

On Monday, solar power plants with a total capacity of 400 MW were switched off by ČEPS to control the electric system.

The Czech Republic transmits excess energy to neighboring countries on typical days, but the sudden high power production on April 10 made the nation turn off its solar power stations. Thus, the government still needs to reform renewable energy storage capacity to prevent such incidents in the future.
